Thanks Erik. The wooden mount got hosed. Lets just say after two failed attempts I had to build a new part, so i decided to instead go with an aluminum mount. The first time I mounted the mirror to the stalk i used old silicone caulk. The curing agent had expired, so it never set. The second time I used fresh silicone, but realized too late that I had poorly measured the mount length, so the mirror mung to low and didn't center in the focuser.

The aluminum piece ended up being fan nicer, and won't suffer from threads stripping over time.

It was pointed out to me that having the teflon pads on the box instead of the base could cause warping over time. So I put laminate on the bottom of the rocker box, and I will be mounting the teflon above the feet on the base, essentially preventing any flex. Rookie mistake. The fix was fortunately easy.

Teflon now transferred from the rocker box to the base plate, just above the feet. No more concern for warpage!

I finished edge sanding the alt bearings. Then I ran the numbers to calculate COG and determined 9" from the bottom of the box. I conservatively added a half inch to be on the safe side. I had to deal with a top heavy design with my 10" build. Adding ballast to the mirror box was a nightmare, and counter productive of a light weight design. I screwed the bearings into place temporarily. Eventually those points will be attached with thumb screws and insert nuts.

Balance was off just slightly with the T6 Naglers, being just slightly bottom heavy. Haha, I probably could move the bearing lower by the original measurement. But I instead chose to add a solid aluminum handle to double as a counter balance. I had a piece of 1" round extruded rod sitting on the shelf, so I trimmed to ends to clean off the burrs, and hand sanded with 60, 120, and 220 grit to a satin finish. Tapped with 1/4-20 and affixed with a thumb screw.

So last night was the inaugural session, and I was joined by my 12 year old daughter. Everything works. Collimation was a snap. Flex was non existent with altitude changes. The fan caused no high frequency blur. And the axial movements were smooth. Next steps: finish the alt bearing connection points, blacken the internals, and poly the wood. Yahoo!

Definitely a compliment! Makes me wonder why scope manufacturers don't do that- it at least offer it as an option. Much better than the eyepiece brackets that instantly dew up all your glass.

Yeah, good point about the dew. It kind of came to me in a dream. LOL. I envisioned having the scope collapsed, as a compact box, with all the parts necessary stored into the collapsed box-like structure. I figured it would be cool if I could design the box/scope to be light enough to carry by hand some distance, with the truss poles in a sling over my back. Then I could access dark sites easier, without needing multiple trips.

For the 12mm truss poles I bought a big roll of 18mm shrink tube. I like the fact that it doesn't have lettering, but was unhappy with the wrinkle finish. It is simply at the threshold of size here for a tight wrap, and it left buckles along the entire pole. So I found a piece of 13mm I had lying around and tested on some 12mm tube. The wrap was perfectly tight and uniform. I couldn't find 13mm in large quantities for a reasonable price so I settled on a 33ft piece of 14mm. It should be here in a couple weeks. Here's hoping. The bottom pic shows the 18mm vs the 13mm.

I designed a shield out of 1/32" Finnish birch (to match the scope), and designed it to fit into the mirror box perfectly under the UTA, acting as a dust cover for the primary mirror. The fittings you see in the image are temporary. I have since purchased small thumb screws.

For the blackened inner walls and surfaces I chose to use black stain, instead of a completely opaque paint. This was a purely aesthetic choice, because I want to retain the furniture feel throughout. I figured it will be dark enough for use in my backyard, which sports NELM 6.0 skies at zenith.

The next step was to poly coat this sucker. I used Waterlox XL-89 satin urethane, my every and all wood coating of choice. Once cured I sanded all black stained surfaces lightly with "00" steel wool, and all external surfaces with "0000". In the last pic you can see one side of a pair of heavy duty knobs that will act as handles to easily lift the mirror box from the rocker box.

Interesting idea with the stain. Looks great and you never have to worry about it peeling off like flocked paper. Such a great project!
