I thought we'd sticky this thread for future reference, so feel free to post any useful info.

This is a very good site:

I was at Powell's books last weekend and saw "How to make and Use a Telescope" from the 60's. It was $8 and I have kicked myself since for not just buying it. They have Texerau's book, used, for $2.95...yep, you read that right.

"Half Price Books" is a good place, too. They're a chain, but I'm not sure how widespread they are. They do have a decent sized science section- much better than a lot of new book stores. Our local Border's remodeled, and their new science section is pathetically tiny!

The big chains don't really cater to science all that much. We don't have 1/2 priced books here but with Powell's we really don't need it. That store is awesome. If you ever make a trip to Portland be sure to visit the Powell's on Burnside. It is huge and has new and used books for aisles and aisles and aisles. They have a separate technical bookstore across the street that they are expanding.

Sorry, went WAAAAY off topic...

I didn't mention that Half Price Books sells only used books. That's really what I like best. I'll rarely buy a new book unless it's something I have to have.

I have both Texereau's second edition and Neil Howard's "Telescope Making". One of these days I'm going to make sure they're actually used books!

I just stumbled across a wonderful book that's available for free download.
It's authored by Bob Lombardi, and the title is "Mechanical Design of Telescopes for the Amateur".

It's very deep, looks impressive![/url]

I'll have to check that out. I'm doing a redesign as well. In fact, I didn't even ship the rocker box from my dob to Hawaii- I'm going to build something better. So I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with, Dave. :)
