Dr Patrick J Hillery (2 May 1923 ? 12 April 2008), 6th President of Ireland (3 December 1976 ? 2 December 1990).

A good country doctor, an honourable and modest family man, an example to his fellow politicians and a President and Commander in Chief who quietly but effectively stood watch for the citizens of the Republic. He was the sort of person one should hope will always be selected as President of Ireland and was in office during most of my years in the Service.

Go n'eirigh an bothar leis agus ar dheis D? go raimh a anam uasal.
The Irish Constitution... is written in the present tense. You reason it in light of this year, not in light of the year in which it was adopted by the people. You don't need to hark back to what some people thought thirty or forty years ago.
Brian Walsh, Supreme Court Justice 1961-90
