I was never really into Jeep’s before moving to Hawaii. I always thought they were owned by right wing military types and with the aerodynamics of a barn, they got terrible mileage.

Well, they do get terrible mileage but living in a place with plenty of odd road treks changed my mind so when I got the opportunity to buy a beat up jeep 3 years ago from a girl moving off island I figured what the heck.

You know Jeep stands for “Just empty every pocket” right? I swear I’ve replaced and upgraded so many things on this vehicle but given that it’s a mechanically sound, rust free ‘98 TJ, at least I won’t lose money if I ever sell it. Actually, it’s been a really fun hobby; the thing about these old Jeeps is that they’re ridiculously easy to work on. And work on it I have! But it’s finally starting to look decent and more importantly be dependable enough to take to those remote locations I love to explore.

Here are a couple of pics of my old Wrangler TJ.

Hahahaha, I thought the joke was that the Jeep was dead, so there ARE no pics!

Kidding of course. Those TJs hold their value for sure. I'd love to live in an area that warrants an off road vehicle with an open top. What kind of parts are we talking? Any cool upgrades/mods? Winch, bar lights, skid plate? Looking forward to pics when the site finally decides to behave itself.

Well, those are tiny pics but for some reason it keeps saying file too large if I make them bigger.

Thanks Jason; yeah it’s been a lot of fun. It’s hard to drive it with the top down and NOT be smiling ear to ear. Especially when I’m heading to a remote beach.

I really like the TJ’s because they have coil spring suspension unlike the earlier CJ’s but they don’t have all the needless electronics like the later JK’s. My sister bought a 2010 JK from a friend here on the Big Island and while it looks nice, it’s not nearly as fun IMO. It’s also an automatic which I think is just WRONG. Mine has a 5 speed which makes it a lot of fun climbing rocks in 4WD low.

Manual is a must in a car like this, I agree. Nice upgrade list. I always liked the return of the round eyes on the TJ. And those wheels look great, much meatier that the originals.

4.88s are going to be sweet. I’m guessing the ratios in the transmission are already pretty steep. You’ll be able to start in third gear no problem! LOL

I went four-wheeling to a remote beach last weekend that’s a really bad lava road and I pretty much stayed in 3rd gear (in 4WD Low) the whole way down and back up. 5th gear has a .80 overdrive so RPM’s at 75mph will only be about 3500. Still plenty doable and it’s not often I do 75 anyway on an island lol
